Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site
Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site
Follow in the footsteps of the tens of thousands of immigrants who arrived on Grosse-Île and visit this beautiful site filled with fascinating and moving stories. Located in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, Grosse-Île served as a quarantine station for the port of Québec from 1832 to 1937, making it Canada's main immigration gateway. The adventure begins with a cruise from Berthier-sur-Mer, during which the Lachance captains will share a few maritime anecdotes. Then, once on the island, through encounters with Parks Canada guides and various characters, you will discover the daily life on the island, the evolution of medicine, the tragedy of 1847 and the rich Irish heritage in Canada.
