Tourisme Île d'Orléans
Île d'Orléans, just a stone's throw from Québec City, is a dream destination for a peaceful getaway away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and urban chaos. This island, resplendent in summer, is well known for its rich terroir and its many pick-your-own-fruit farms prized by foodies! It's also one of the cradles of the first settlements in the St. Lawrence Valley, making it of great historical value. And did you know it also has amazing landscapes? Pack your bags and hit the road to Île d'Orléans!
History in the spotlight
Many people associate this island with splendid sun-drenched strawberries and summer fruits, but it also stands out thanks to its many interesting cultural and historical sites. Start by visiting the Manoir Mauvide-Genest, a heritage building that teaches visitors about the seigneurial system in New France, or the Maison Drouin, a typical dwelling of the island's first residents. Then, for a complete history lesson, stop by the Maison de nos Aïeux.
Be sure to take a refreshing tour of Cassis Monna & Filles, specializing in liqueur-making, to see craftspeople at work and discover the techniques involved in transforming blackcurrants into alcohol. To finish off your day in style, visit the Espace Félix-Leclerc, which pays tribute to this giant of Quebec song and literature, or the Maritime Park, to fill up on fresh air and knowledge in a vintage shipyard.
Music and theatre
Beauty has always inspired artists! And there are plenty of ways to enjoy music and performing arts on Île d’Orléans. At Espace Félix-Leclerc and the Sainte-Pétronille Church, a variety of concerts are performed all summer. And for some summer theatre (in French), head over to the Nouveau Théâtre de l'île d'Orléans.
Hidden talent and treasures
Before you leave, take a moment to appreciate the work and talent of the many members of BLEU, a group that showcases the island's creators in all disciplines. You can also explore the Parcours d'un flâneur at Espace Félix-Leclerc, which combines nature, contemporary art and poetry. What’s more, there are 50 outdoor artworks spread out over 29 locations across the island.
