Spend a day out in the country and behind the scenes at Quebec’s farms
Published on August 17, 2026 • Featured Events
We eat three times a day, and very often, we’ve never even seen or set foot where that food is grown. On Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., more than 50 farms across Quebec will open their doors to the public for the 22nd edition of Portes ouvertes sur les fermes du Québec, presented by the Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA). It’s a day when you can see things for yourself, ask questions and get the answers straight from the people who do the work.

Farms you can’t visit at any other time
We’ve all seen pick-your-own farms and roadside stands. What this event offers is a whole other experience: livestock farms, wheat fields, dairy facilities—operations that run year-round but are not usually open to visitors. Once a year, the gates open. You get to step into the barn, learn about production methods and finally understand what agri-environmental practices actually are. For many people, this is their first experience at the heart of Quebec’s agricultural expertise.
A day of free, family-friendly activities
Admission is free, and so are all of the other activities on site: tastings, educational workshops, guided tours, tractor rides, veterinary demonstrations, inflatable games and face painting for kids. Activities vary by farm, but one thing remains the same—they’re all free of charge.
The only thing you have to pay for is what you buy at the farm stand. So be sure to bring bags and a cooler, because it’s always very tempting to leave with your hands full when you can get things straight at the source.
Plan your day, your way
If you’re eager to get started, take the opportunity to plan your day in advance, whether you want to visit farms near home or combine your visits with a countryside road trip to a neighbouring region.
The website lets you browse participating farms by selecting a region and the type of production you’d like to see. Some areas of Quebec have several farms within a short distance of each other, allowing you to visit two or three in a single day. Elsewhere, the distances mean you’ll have to choose just one and take your time exploring the surrounding area while you’re there.
No matter which option you choose, it’s a great way to meet local farmers and gain a better understanding of what goes into Quebec’s flavours.
And don’t forget that the event takes place rain or shine, so be sure to bring sunscreen or an umbrella depending on the weather!
