Starting on October 22, 2026, if you are in Québec City, be sure to visit Espace Riopelle, the new pavilion at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ). It will give you the opportunity to celebrate artist Jean Paul Riopelle’s legacy in a unique atmosphere and to discover the world of an icon of Quebec’s modern art movement.

Four days of celebrations for the opening
From October 22 to 25, 2026, the pavilion will open with an unforgettable temporary program that includes dance, music and art films. Expect magical moments of connection with local artists, inspired by Riopelle’s work. Also, relive his fascination with huge glaciers in the Iceberg, la route des géants virtual reality experience.
As you walk through the different exhibitions, get swept up in the music played by Conservatoire de musique de Québec students, intended to awaken the senses and stir the emotions. And to let the artist in you blossom, take advantage of the creation workshops open to the public.
A new, timeless space
Beyond the paintings, art installations and sculptures, the new pavilion’s very architecture is designed to create an immersive experience. Its location, between the St. Lawrence River and the Plains of Abraham, offers breathtaking views of these natural treasures that echo Riopelle’s inspirations. With its gorgeous patios and huge windows, bathed in the soft autumn light, this space is the ideal setting for immersing yourself in the works of art.
Complementing the facilities is a lovely gift shop where you can find a souvenir of Riopelle’s work to take home with you.
Fascinating and complementary exhibitions
As you explore the three floors of the new pavilion, discover four inaugural exhibitions that perfectly complement one another and will plunge you into Riopelle’s world.
Travel back in time in one of the largest exhibitions dedicated to the artist: The Expression of Gesture. You can also view his Tribute to Rosa Luxemburg fresco from an original angle, paired with an olfactory art experience. And you won’t want to miss his engaged art intermixed with pieces from other artists in the Challenging, Modern Art in Québec exhibition, or the vulnerability of the Art and Emotions exhibition, with its inspiring video testimonials.
