Explore the land of Pessamit
Discover Pessamit on an insightful guided tour (webpage in French only) that will take you to the heart of Nitassinan, the ancestral territory of the Innu people. Accompanied by a guide from the community, you’ll have the chance to learn more about the history, traditions and way of life of the Innu people, also known as the “laughing people.”
Lasting approximately 90 minutes, this tour offers a chance to better understand the significance of Pessamit throughout history, the realities that have shaped the community, and the cultural heritage passed down from generation to generation.
During the summer season, tours depart every hour between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to take part in an experience that is both educational and inspiring.
Tales and legends that bring Innu culture to life
Let yourself be swept away by Innu tales and legends that have been passed down through generations.
This 45-minute activity is led by an Innu guide who will share ancestral stories, helping you discover the deep connection that binds the Innu people to the land, their language, and their traditions.
To round out this experience, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy Labrador tea and bannock, a traditional Indigenous recipe. This activity offers a true immersion into the Pessamit community.
An exhibition to better understand history
Continue your exploration outdoors with the cultural exhibition “Sous les barrages” Beneath the Dams (website in French and Innu only) located along Laletaut Street.
Through interpretive panels and an audio guide, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the history of the Innu people and their nomadic way of life in the past. The exhibition recounts the significant changes the community experienced following the construction of dams beginning in the 1950s.
