A place chock-full of history and a haven for nature and unique culture, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean is a veritable kingdom to discover. Here are three great ways you can explore each of these aspects of the region this summer.
Visit the Val-Jalbert historic village
A must-see tourist destination in the region, the Val-Jalbert Historic Village immerses visitors in the industrial history of Quebec, a time when the village moved to the rhythm of its pulp mill. The village has everything you might need to feel the atmosphere of the past: wooden period homes, the convent school, the post office and the general store. Costumed actors straight out of the 1900s add an extra touch of magic by offering a rare close-up view of the lives of the era’s characters. A ride up the Ouiatchouan waterfall in a cable car, a visit in a trolley bus, and the immersive, dazzling show are only a few of the many activities to discover on site!

Discover the cultures of the First Nations
Attend the Grand Reunion of the First Nations
From July 5 to 14 2024, Mashteuiatsh welcomes the 18th annual edition of the Grand Reunion of the First Nations. This summer celebration carries forward a millenia-old tradition on the community’s land, which has always been recognized as an important meeting place during the time before the arrival of settlers. The schedule includes cultural sharing activities, traditional sporting activities, musical performances, traditional Ilnu dances and pow-wows (inter-national or inter-community dances), spectacular fireworks and much more. It’s a rare chance to be immersed in the cultural riches of the First Nations.
