Located in the Appalachian Mountains, in the Estrie region, the city of Lac-Mégantic offers a whole variety of accessible and fun activities to fully enjoy the destination at your own pace and according to your preferences. Here are three ways to make the most of your visit.
The city of Lac-Mégantic
Lac-Mégantic is a place that is ideal to visit on a bike. Its network of bike paths connects the city's centre to the Baie-des-Sables vacation destination, a forest haven featuring a four-star campground with 350 campsites, comfortable chalets, a long sandy beach and a lively water sports centre. Outdoor enthusiasts will also appreciate the site’s walking trails. In town, the Vétérans park and Dourdan Beach are pleasant places to stop and relax. Before heading home, take the time to get brunch downtown, then continue on to the Chaudière River, where lookouts provide spectacular views.
Lac-Mégantic’s downtown core is an open-air museum. The Gare patrimoniale (heritage train station) hosts exhibitions that retrace 12,500 years of occupation of the territory, while the Marcheur d’étoiles circuit takes visitors on a tour of 48 massive sculptures and beautiful murals. Stop to admire the impressive neo-Gothic architecture of Sainte-Agnès church along the way. For a break between activities, head to the Quartier Artisan to see art and handicrafts or visit the Musi-Café, which has become one of the city’s iconic spots. In the evening, cap off the day with a concert at the Vétérans park or a jaunt to ASTROLab, to marvel at the exceptionally starry sky.
For families, Lac-Mégantic makes it easy to combine relaxation, play and outdoor activities. The Baie-des-Sables vacation destination remains an excellent starting point, with its lake, trails, playgrounds and activities for all ages. In town, children can also learn through play at the Gare patrimoniale, by embarking on the microgrid educational mission created just for them. For a family picnic, head to OTJ park, where the beach, water games and playground structures provide everything needed for a fun summer afternoon. The more active members of the family will want to try the exercise circuit at the Mégantic sports centre and visit Espace jeunesse Desjardins, with its pump track and skate park. To end the day on a high note, head to the Vétérans park, a perfect place for stargazing.
